St.Stephen's Basilica

Can you see those amazing towers on the pictuere? Those are the St. Stephen's Basilicas towers over Pest. The photo was taken from the Buda Castle from the other side of the Danube river. If you are planning to visit the Basilica the most beautiful panorama of Budapest from the Pest side can be seen from the top at the Cupola. The St. Stephen's Basilica is the largest church in Budapest. It took more than 50 years to build. The dome is 96 meters high the same exact height as the Budapest Parliament, in fact current building regulations stipulate that no other structure in the inner city of Budapest can be taller than 96 meteres. Beautiful architecture and a beautiful view can be seen here from the top. You definately have to put this attraction in your list during your stay. Make sure you climb up to the vantagepoint at the dome and do not miss the  exceptional view at the city from here. Climing up to the top is more than worth it, the 360 views overlooking Budapest is really spectacular. The walk up the stairs ( 362 steps ) can be shortened by the elevator ride reaching almost to the top. Of course not just the hungarians and the tourist are amazed by this beautiful building. Movie stars whom has stayed here for a while was amazed by our historical buildings.

Actor Anthony Hopkins spent some time in Budapest some years ago for the filming of The Rite. He of course, visited the St. Stephen's Basilica. He loved walking and usually he was walking alone or with his wife. "Going for a walk in Budapest became my hobby..." Anthony Hopkins said he fell in love with the city. What can I say? Me too :) In the fil  he speaks a little bit Hungarian, but only we hungarians are able to understand without a subtitle. Check the scene here from the movie: (The Rite)

The Basilica is an amazing place to visit inside too. The patron saint of the church is St. Stephen, the first king of Hungary. His mummified right hand is kept in a glass case in the small chapel to the left of the main altar. The beautiful interior is also noteworthy as it is decorated by famous artists of the era. The inside is just as beautiful as you would expect a basilica to be. Take a tour with me in this gorgeous building if you want to get to know more about the history.
